-- How about Nyjer Morgan and Freddy Sanchez at the top of the order? Together, they're hitting .324 with an OBP of .373 and 35 runs scored, 20 RBI, 7 stolen bases and 18 extra-base knocks in 23 games. Now if the guys behind them can get it in gear...
-- The Bucs moved from fifth to second with the win yesterday. The Central is pretty tightly packed, with four teams within a 1/2 game of one another. The only worry is St. Louis pulling away; they're up by 4 games going into today's action.
-- Jim Negrych, Altoona 2B, has been day-to-day with a bad left leg since Thursday. Let's hope it's nothing serious for the injury-haunted prospect. SS Brian Friday has missed two weeks with vertigo; still no timetable for his return. To add to the mess, Jose Tabata is out 4-6 weeks with a strained right hammy. And you thought they were dropping like hot potatoes in Pittsburgh?
-- The call-ups begin. The struggling Cleveland Indians have sent for LF Matt LaPorta from AAA Columbus. LaPorta, 24, hit .333 with 5 HR & 14 RBI in 21 games. He's scored 22 runs and compiled an OPS of 1.054. He was the Brewer's first round draft pick in 2007 (7th overall) and was the key piece of the CC Sabathia deal.
Can David Price and Matt Weiters be far behind?
-- Derrick Turnbow declared for free agency after fizzling in his come-back try with with Texas. Turnbow had an 8.58 ERA, walked nine and allowed 11 hits in 6-1/3 innings for AAA Oklahoma City, striking out just one batter. The Bucs were kicking the ex-Brewers' tires during the off season; sometimes no move is the best move.
-- It's looking more and more like A-Rod really is A-Fraud. Sports Illustrated reports allegations that he was tipping pitches to opposing batters during blow-outs in his Ranger years, and expected them to reciprocate. If that's substantiated, he should be banned from the game, no questions asked.
Drugs affect the individual, but tipping your pitcher's hand goes to the heart of the game every bit as much as Pete Rose's betting did.
